Investigation of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance among isolates obtained in a Turkish intensive care unit.
The aim of this study was to search for three plasmid-encoded, quinolone-resistant determinants: qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS. Thus, 460 Gram-negative strains belonging to 11 different genera (clinical, 347; non-clinical, i.e., from a rectal swab, 113), of which 40% were ciprofloxacin-resistant, were recovered from patients in an intensive care unit at the Istanbul Medical Faculty, Turkey, in the years...

We determined the prevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance mechanisms among non-Typhi Salmonella spp. isolated from humans, food animals, and retail meat in the United States in 2007. Six isolates collected from humans harbored aac(6')Ib-cr or a qnr gene. Most prevalent was qnrS1. No animal or retail meat isolates harbored a plasmid-mediated mechanism.

Quinolones are potent antibacterial agents that specifically target bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Widespread use of these agents has contributed to the rise of bacterial quinolone resistance. Previous studies have shown that quinolone resistance arises by mutations in chromosomal genes. Recently, a multiresistance plasmid was discovered that encodes transferable resistance to quino...
متن کاملPrevalence of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance.
Quinolone resistance encoded by the qnr gene and mediated by plasmid pMG252 was discovered in a clinical strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae that was isolated in 1994 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center. The gene codes for a protein that protects DNA gyrase from quinolone inhibition and that belongs to the pentapeptide repeat family of proteins. The prevalence of the gene has ...

Although plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) was thought not to exist before its discovery in 1998, the past decade has seen an explosion of research characterizing this phenomenon. The best-described form of PMQR is determined by the qnr group of genes. These genes, likely originating in aquatic organisms, code for pentapeptide repeat proteins. These proteins reduce susceptibility to ...
